Before you choose
Start with placement and contrast
Decide whether you want every color visible all the time or only when the hair moves. The gallery includes saturated rainbow bobs, colorful lengths beneath a dark crown and restrained jewel-tone ribbons. Those are different placements, even when the palette sounds similar.
If one color is the real priority, compare the purple hair color ideas gallery before committing to a full multicolor result.

15 ways to place rainbow color
Compare the direction of the color bands and how much of the base stays visible. A full rainbow bob and a concealed panel give very different everyday results.
Idea 01
Rainbow Gradient on a Sleek Bob
A straight surface keeps the rainbow gradient readable from the cool crown to the bright red perimeter.
- Cut
- Sleek bob
- Top
- Blue green
- Ends
- Orange red
The front point falls below the chin while the upper hair stays close to the head. Blue and green occupy the root area, yellow fills the middle, and orange-red dominates the ends. There are no curls to break the transition into separate flashes.
Wearability note: Save this for a continuous gradient on a precise bob. If you prefer waves, ask how the same color order would look when the bands bend and overlap instead of lying flat.
Idea 02
Warm Rainbow on a Wavy Lob
Warm orange and yellow take the lead, with violet appearing between the brighter waves rather than across the whole crown.
- Length
- Lob
- Palette
- Warm rainbow
- Finish
- Wavy
The loose bends begin high and continue to the shoulder-length ends. Thin yellow sections sit beside broad orange and pink pieces, while a cool violet ribbon creates contrast near the face. The color pattern follows strands instead of making horizontal stripes.
Wearability note: Choose this if you want a predominantly warm rainbow. Show which cool accents you want to keep, since increasing the violet would change the balance even if the same colors were used.
Idea 03
Neon Waves With Black Ends
A dark lower edge gives the neon rainbow a strong stopping point instead of letting every strand remain bright.
- Length
- Shoulder length
- Palette
- Neon
- Ends
- Black
Green and yellow sit high on the waves, while pink, orange and violet cross the middle. Several tips return to black. The broad curls expose multiple colors at once, and the cut stays compact around the shoulders rather than extending far down the back.
Wearability note: Use this if you like vivid color with visible darkness. Point out the black tips separately from root depth; they are a distinct part of this reference and not simply shadow between curls.

Idea 04
Pink and Teal Half-Up Waves
The small half-up gather exposes teal ribbons underneath a predominantly pink surface.
- Length
- Long
- Base
- Pink
- Accents
- Teal and peach
Magenta runs from the crown through most lengths, while turquoise and pale peach appear as narrow sections. A decorative tie marks the gather at the back. Loose waves continue well below it, allowing the accent colors to reappear at several heights.
Wearability note: Save this if pink should remain dominant and the other shades are accents. Compare the placement with your usual loose hairstyle, because pulling the top back reveals sections that may otherwise sit underneath.
Idea 05
Pastel Front With Bright Underlayers
A pale pink front softens the face while brighter orange and green remain visible farther back.
- Length
- Long
- Front
- Pale pink
- Underlayer
- Bright colors
The front lengths are mostly blush and light blonde. Behind them, stronger orange and green panels appear through loose waves. The color is not evenly distributed around the head; the side view makes the contrast between quiet front and bright back particularly clear.
Wearability note: Choose this for unevenly placed brightness rather than an all-over rainbow. Bring a second back view if possible and decide how much of the vivid underlayer you want exposed when the hair is tucked behind an ear.
Idea 06
Blonde Waves With Rainbow Lengths
The blonde crown keeps this rainbow concentrated through the lower waves rather than at the scalp.
- Base
- Blonde
- Placement
- Lower lengths
- Finish
- Waves
Warm blonde surrounds the part and face. Cool blue strands begin through the middle, followed by green, yellow and orange near the ends. The colors appear in neighboring ribbons instead of one uniform fade, with some blonde still running down between them.
Wearability note: Use this if you want to preserve a blonde top. Show where the first vivid shade starts, because a higher placement would make the rainbow more noticeable around your face as well as from behind.
Idea 07
Horizontal Rainbow on an Angled Bob
Horizontal warm stripes turn the straight bob into a graphic pattern above a solid teal lower section.
- Cut
- Angled bob
- Pattern
- Horizontal bands
- Ends
- Teal
Orange and pink cover the upper hair, with narrow yellow bands crossing from side to side. Purple is visible close to the part. The front point is longer than the back, so the teal occupies a deeper panel beside the face than it does at the nape.
Wearability note: Save this if you usually wear the cut straight and want crisp banding. Ask how the stripes would line up across your own angled perimeter; a different front length changes the proportions of the colored blocks.
Idea 08
Rainbow Panels on a Straight Lob
Separate vertical panels make the rainbow clear without requiring a full gradient across every strand.
- Length
- Lob
- Pattern
- Vertical panels
- Ends
- Turquoise
Pink is strong at the crown, then pale yellow, violet and green pieces extend down the surface. Turquoise fills much of the lower edge. The straight finish exposes how neighboring colors meet and the blunt-looking ends keep the overall shape simple.
Wearability note: Choose this for panel placement rather than blended balayage. Decide which colors should frame your face and which belong behind them, since the side view shows only part of the arrangement around the head.
Idea 09
Rainbow Side Panel on a Dark Mullet
A bright side panel and colored nape leave most of the short crown dark.
- Cut
- Short mullet
- Base
- Dark
- Placement
- Side and nape
The top is tousled black-blue with a short fringe. Green and turquoise sweep beside the temple, while yellow and violet appear in the longer strands below the ear. The hair is much shorter on top than at the back, so color follows an uneven outline.
Wearability note: Save this if you want vivid accents on a short cut with a longer nape. Discuss the haircut separately; placing the same colors on a conventional pixie would remove much of the visible rainbow length.
Idea 10
Bright Ribbons Beneath Dark Waves
Most of the hair stays dark, while a few broad rainbow ribbons travel through the lower waves.
- Length
- Long
- Base
- Dark
- Placement
- Underlayer ribbons
The crown and upper surface are almost black. Orange-red becomes visible beside the face and turquoise appears farther down, with yellow between them. The thick loose waves alternately reveal and cover each colored section, making the brightness change with movement.
Wearability note: Use this if you want a dark overall result with strong flashes of color. Show how wide the ribbons should be; fine accents would look much subtler than the broad lower sections in this photograph.
Idea 11
Hidden Rainbow Under a Brown Crown
Gathering the brown top reveals a larger rainbow layer below the crown.
- Length
- Long
- Top
- Brown
- Underlayer
- Rainbow
The upper section is twisted back, leaving the bright lengths uncovered. Blue, pink, green and orange run through narrow curls, while brown remains visible between them. The darker top makes the exposed palette feel more concentrated than an all-over rainbow would.
Wearability note: Save this for an underlayer that becomes obvious in a half-up style. Ask how much color would remain visible with the top loose, because this gathered photograph shows the concealed area at its most exposed.
Idea 12
Pastel Rainbow in a Twisted Updo
Twists cross the color ribbons, making several pastel shades visible within each loop.
- Style
- Twisted updo
- Palette
- Pastel rainbow
- Length
- Long
Teal and dark violet appear near the crown, while yellow and pink brighten the broad twisted center. The lower hair gathers into a loose trailing braid-like shape. Decorative metal pins sit across the middle, but the color changes remain clear around them.
Wearability note: Use this to see how multicolor lengths behave when gathered. Save a loose-hair reference as well if you are choosing the dye placement, since the twists deliberately move strands away from their usual resting position.
Idea 13
Teal Braided Top With Pink Ends
A teal braid draws the eye down the center while the surrounding ends fade toward pink.
- Root
- Dark
- Top
- Teal
- Ends
- Pink
The crown is dark and the braid starts close to the scalp. Turquoise fills the braid and upper lengths, then mint and pale yellow appear before the pink ends. Loose waves on either side reveal the transition over a larger area than the braid alone.
Wearability note: Choose this for a cooler rainbow that warms toward the ends. Bring the image for color order and a separate loose view for placement if you will rarely wear the center braid.
Idea 14
Deep Blue Waves With Rainbow Ribbons
Deep blue occupies most of the surface, allowing the brighter rainbow ribbons to stand out in smaller sections.
- Length
- Long
- Base
- Deep blue
- Accents
- Rainbow ribbons
Green and orange appear higher in the back view, while red and magenta continue through the lower lengths. Deep blue fills the spaces between the brighter sections and stays visible in the wave valleys. This photograph shows color placement through the back, not how the front frames the face.
Wearability note: Save this if blue is the base you want to keep dominant. Point out the proportion of blue to warm accents, since using equal amounts of every color would create a much lighter and busier result.
Idea 15
Muted Jewel Rainbow on Dark Waves
Violet, blue and red stay deep enough that the overall look still reads dark between the waves.
- Length
- Shoulder length
- Base
- Dark
- Palette
- Jewel tones
A nearly black crown leads into colored ribbons through the middle and ends. Purple is strongest, with blue and red appearing on neighboring bends. The softly uneven lower edge keeps the cut from forming a solid color block, and there are no pale pastel tips.
Wearability note: Use this if you prefer a restrained multicolor palette to neon bands. Compare a daylight reference too, because dark jewel tones can appear much brighter under direct salon lighting than they do in shade.
Bands or ribbons?
Horizontal bands draw lines across the cut. Vertical ribbons follow individual sections of hair and separate as waves move. A gradient can travel from cooler roots to warmer ends without distinct stripes. Save a photograph that shows the direction you want.
A cut changes the pattern: a short bob holds a compact graphic, while long hair allows a larger fade.
How much color should stay hidden?
A dark top layer can cover brighter strands beneath it, but a braid, curl or ponytail may expose them. A partly concealed panel is not guaranteed to remain invisible in every style. Compare the loose-hair and gathered examples before choosing.
Bring the reference for placement and discuss achievable brightness, fading and the starting base with a colorist.
