Look at the root area first, then the face frame and ends. This makes it easier to tell whether you like the underlying depth or only the brightest pieces.
Read placement through the texture
Waves and layers can make highlights look more separated than they appear on straight hair. Use the image as a placement guide, not a guaranteed shade match.
Plan the grow-out
Ask how often the root, toner, or brighter front pieces need refreshing. A softer transition usually grows out more quietly than a high-contrast placement.
